Did or Done?

Many people tend to misuse did and done, using done when they should use did. Use did for the simple past tense, use done for the present perfect and past perfect tenses. (forms of to do)

Examples:

. . . .We did all our chores.................................... simple past tense
. . . .She has already done the work...................... present perfect tense
. . . .We have done many things........................... present perfect tense
. . . .No one had done that before......................... past perfect tense

Any form of to have, used as a helping verb, is a clue that the main verb is in the present perfect or past perfect tense.

Write did or done in the blank to make the sentence correct. The helping verb will not be highlighted. The first two have been done for you. Note: Sometimes the verb to do is a helping verb; it's not used that way in these sentences.

1._ The kids have done many projects at school.
2._ Have you seen what they did?
3._ Have you ___________ your homework?
4._ I ___________ the best I could.
5._ Kim had ___________ all the shoveling before we arrived.
6._ Andy has already ___________ forty puzzles.
7._ I want to know who ___________ this!
8._ Cheryl ___________ the research for the article.
9._ You have ___________ a wonderful thing!
10. Brian ___________ twenty sit-ups in eighteen seconds.
